Stearman database - need help

I'm putting together a database of Stearmans that are still in the current US (and Canadian so far) registries. I'm basing it on the serial number in the registries and then determining the Army and/or Navy serial numbers and types based on several sources.

I have run into some problems with invalid serial numbers. They should all be in the format 75-xxxx.

I'm not sure how this is going to look, but I have pasted the data on the problem aircraft below. If anyone can suggest a better way to list them, please let me know.

If anybody has any accurate information about these aircraft, I would appreciate hearing about it. I can use either Boeing constructor numbers (75-xxxx) or Army or Navy serial numbers.

Once the database is complete I will make it available to anyone who wants it, or I can look up specific aircraft if there are questions.

This is a daunting task you are undertaking !!

How are you deciding if they are still active ?

Are you aware of this website - which gives some tie in between

Stearman / Boeing types , Navy Bureau nos and Aircraft Serials

Some of the queries - MAY be becaused the Bureau no as been quoted to the FAA

Also there appear to be 136 PT-17A conversions (at the bottom of the listing)

- I wonder if these were re-serialled - the list does not give any info

If you wanted me to do some reasearch on the UK Stearmans - I would be willing to have a look for you

This will indeed be a big task...but I applaud the idea and the effort. A data base of this sort is needed for the Stearman.

Thanks for the good info guys.

I have the bulk of the research done for U.S. and Canadian registered aircraft. I'm just attempting to clear up some of the anomalies with this post.

I'm not really trying to determine if they are active. I don't have any way to do that. So far I am listing all that are in the current FAA (and what I could find in the Canadian) registries. Those contain many listings that are not currently active aircraft. Also, the FAA database is notoriously error prone.

I'm not trying to create a comprehensive listing of all Stearmans. There were almost 10,000 of them. My list currently contains about 2,700. I mainly want to quickly look up a plane I photograph and get all the numbers for it.

I haven't found any information on the conversions either.

If you know of an online source listing those in the UK, that would help, or if you could provide a list that would also be good. I would need registration and Boeing serial (75-xxxx) at minimum. My listing is by the Boeing number with the military number or numbers added from various sources.

Thanks for the web site info. Your FAA query is incomplete because there are a lot of them that aren't A75. I download the FAA data every week and keep it in an Access database, so I can get that data pretty easily. I also downloaded the Canadian one the other day and only found 36 aircraft there.

The Warbirds Registry information is not very useful. They only have a small number of planes listed and I have already determined that much of the data on those is incomplete or incorrect, particularly the type designation. He calls all of them PT-17's.

I'll check your photos, but I have found that people often paint their planes however they want without concern for historical accuracy. Many of the Stearmans that were Army planes are painted with Navy colors and vice versa, so the numbers painted on them are not really reliable.

I had that one but I can add a note about its paint job. It's obviously highly modified from when it was PT-17 41-25585.
