OLD TUCSON DOWNTOWN MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

This is what I am looking for and can't find anywhere: the location of the airport (downtown airport, municipal airport) which Tucson AZ used until, say, 1963, when the present Tucson International was opened. It was Tucson's main and official airport. The City does not seem to know. I get directions which lead me to the site of the old Freeway Airport, a private field at the freeway and Prince. That's not it. It's the one the Lockheed Connies. etc. landed at. Please help. b52diegogarcia@yahoo.com

You can probably find it with this information. It sounds like you are referring to the former Tucson Municipal Flying Field, that also had three other names over the years. Paul Freeman on his web site has information on many former or abandoned airfields, including in and around Tucson, Arizona. Go to www.airfields-freeman.com for more information on Abandoned and Little-Known Fields. Click on Arizona-then on the Tucson area listings in two different groups. Coordinates and photos may be given, along with years operated and histories to aid you.

I think the Tucson Municipal Flying Field pre-dated the one referred to on the original message.

Chris, Your link is defective-doesn't link-try respelling Tucson in two places. You probably are correct about the field, your having supplied a LOT of material to Paul Freeman. I just looked at what I thought reasonable from greenhorn's description and request. I am sure the right former airport is described there.

The best link to answer greenheron's questions is still Freeman's in my first post of this thread. Freeman shows several dated sectional chart views, many aerial photographs in time sequence, discusses various airfield name references and gives a time line history of the field in question and its owners, uses, etc. Chris Kennedy of the A-D site has supplied much of the old information on this airport. Evidently he saved his AOPA Airport Directories-I would give mine to a person interested in learning to fly, or a non-member pilot acquaintance, retaining only the current annual issue. Otherwise, I would have a stack of 43 of them.
