Now that you detectives have honed your skills on Glenn's unknowns, why don't you take at look at my Unknowns folder and see if you can find anything you recognize there. Many of them are pretty old.

I believe your "Unknown Stearman at DVT" is N59269 (cn 75-3867), a Boeing PT-17 Kaydet (A75N1).

Airliners.net has images from 2002 when it was painted in US Air Force training colours and the FAA reg appears on the tail fin.

Mongster was a highly-modified Mong Sport. Tom Aberly and Dallas Christian built two similar planes for Reno—Tom's was Race #25 Two Bits. This pic is before I owned the Christian plane, which I raced at Reno from '80 to '82. It was sold to Mick Richardson in Tucson, who raced it for one year then sold it to someone in San Jose. As of now, I don't believe it has flown since. (— Dave Morss 1/5/04)

I think it to be worth entering the database, listing the cn as"Unknown"

"FH-227B. Looks like Fairchild-Hiller demonstrator."

Pretty sure that this is FH-227E N7804M cn 50.

Check it out on fh227.rwy34.com a website devoted to this aircraft type.

The site has a picture of it at La Guardia in 1969, the same year as your image.

The Stearman could very well be N59269, but I don't think I can list it that way without more evidence. Too bad the old non-military paint schemes went out of style. That last number could be a zero too and there is a Stearman with that number. I'll add 59269 as a possibility.

The Scampy and Mongster are really just listed as unknown because they don't have current registrations. I should probably add profiles for them under these numbers. I think I now have enough information to do that.

I think the FH-227 is probably more like one of Terry's suggestions, although I don't know which one so it will probably have to remain unknown until somebody comes forward with definitive information about which was actually at Dulles that day. The photo you mention of N7804M was actually from 1973 and the aircraft seems to be missing an antenna on the top that is in my photo and the ones of N2227L. That's not definitive though, so yours could still be the one. I'll list all three as possibilities.

Thanks very much for your input. Too bad there are several aircraft that all looked alike at one point. I need somebody who knows which one was at Dulles for that show. I'm going to list all the possibilities.

I believe the c/n (msn) is 76-017 (no military serial tie-up)

Are you sure about the C-140? Andy Marden's new book lists two C-140B's in the restoration area of the museum, 62-4200 and 62-4197. He has a note next to the latter saying "(only one Feb 10)." I would interpret that to mean that 62-4197 is the one that was there when I took the photo in March, 2010. My interpretation could be wrong, of course, or Marden could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure the C-140 in my photo is not 62-4200. I found a recent picture of it at AMARG and it was in white and blue United States of America colors.

Looks as if -4200 has more of the blue paint still intact. (taking into account the photo dates). -4197 pix shows it parked next to the C-121 :?:

I was trying to "photo-compare" antenna placements, rudder-top details, and nose area to try and distinguish which was which...

I'm going with 62-4197. The C-121 in the Flickr photo is in the background of my photo. There is another one in the main display area.
