OK Tigers-Name the very first airliner by make and model originally certificated of post-war design in and by the USA after World War II. Hint: Your answer aircraft must have at least two normally-operating engines and date of certification by month and year must be supplied to win.

I grabbed my copy of U.S. Civil Aircraft Volume 8 by Joseph P. Juptner. My guess is the Martin-Liner, 2-0-2 (202A) ATC #795 (8-13-1947).

Joe starts his description with Labeled also as 'One of the first airlines of completely postwar design.'

Timothy,

Congratulations, you are absolutely correct and probably set a speed record with your fast answer. The correct answer is also on this site in my comprehensive article on the last flying Martin 4-0-4, the 2-0-2's more successful big (by a tad) brother.

Martin announced in November 1945 development of a new design twin engine airliner with 36/40 seats designated Martin-Liner 2-0-2. The prototype first flew on 22 November 1946 and it gained CAA certification in August 1947.

The Glenn L. Martin Company also announced further versions of the 2-0-2 denoted Martin 3-0-3 for passengers and Martin 3-0-4 for freighter cargo, but these were never built or certificated.

As unpressurized piston-powered designs, the 2-0-2 and 4-0-4 were eclipsed by new generation turboprop airliners.

Thank you again for participating in these little quizzes.
