Updates as announced by USAF

2 months later

All 2013 performances of the USAF Thunderbirds have been outright cancelled because of mandatory budget cuts.

Also, all performances of the US Army's Golden Knights Parachute Team have been outright cancelled.

Hi Doug,

As I mentioned in another thread, the cancellation announcement came halfway through the Australian International Airshow at Avalon. The US contingent were already here and had participated on the first couple of days. I attended the last day and was lucky the Raptor, C17 and F16 flew their demonstrations. The B-52 had flown on earlier days but not the final day. As I said elsewhere, I guess they figured thy were here, they might as well fly.

Not all have been cancelled, just the ones after April 1. They are still performing at the TICO Warbird Airshow in Titusville FL - supposed to be their last appearance before the cuts. There is also some talk that they might only be cancelled for a couple months as the ones towards the end of the year are still tentative

That specific information was from a published Associated Press release dated Monday 11 March 2013. Re the Thunderbirds and the Golden Knights-the term "outright" was used re the 2013 airshow appearance cancellations.

Re the Blue Angels-the press release stated "While the Blue Angels' spring schedule is in doubt, the Air Force's formation-flying Thunderbirds and the Army's Golden Knights skydivers have cancelled their performances outright".

I just report the published news, with local information re Point Mugu's Airshow. I am sure there will be updates as any new information from the military services is officially released.

The Sequester kicks in April 1. Nothing really has taken effect just yet - that is why T-birds will still have their show at Titusville, since it is March 22-24, which is their last show probably for the year unless something changes. I don't want to get political, but there will be quite an outrage about certain things not getting cut and stuff that is popular with the general population getting cut.

Our tower - Orlando Executive was on the list for closure on April 1. However due to ORL be right next to MCO class Bravo Airspace it was seen as too risky. The tower is not closing, however tower staff will have to take non paid vacations throughout the rest of the year and the tower instead of being closed 11p-6a, will more likely be closed 9p-7a.

Although the USAF Chief of the Engagement Division tried to salvage the season cut of the Thunderbirds airshows for 2013, it didn't happen and all shows after 1 April 2013 are officially cancelled. The standown includes cancellation of support to all airshows, trade shows, flyovers (including funerals and military graduations), orientation flights, heritage flights, F-22 demonstration flights and open houses, unless the event includes only local static assets. (Aircraft gate guards on pylons being static assets, or already parked aircraft, no flyins?)
