Actually, here is the sequence:
In 1944 the plane was built as C-47B 43-49615.
In December 1944 the plane was transferred to the Navy, who redesignated the plane as an R4D-6.
Then, in 1951-52 the Navy had the plane converted to R4D-8 (Super DC-3), which caused a new c/n.
In 1962, with the new tri-service designation system, the plane was redesignated as C-117D.
Now, the profile ID could be: C-117D, c/n 43322, and then a comment about the original type, s/n, and c/n, as well as type changes.
The Naval Museum's book is where the error lies. They've never changed it since 2003 (I have the 2003 and 2012 versions), but their on-line history of the plane has the correct C-117 model.
