The local Ventura County STAR newspaper reported this aircraft on a training flight crashed in a field in Ojai, California on 10 December 2009 with two fatalities. The aircraft was owned by Aviation Pacific, Inc., a flight school at CMA, Camarillo Airport, California. The 19 year old student from India was on his fifth dual training flight with a 51 year old experienced flight instructor. The plane crashed nose down about 2 p.m. on the campus of the Krotona Institute of Theosophy near Krotona Road. The crash site was at the edge of a narrow driveway just as a truck was driving through. Some homes were nearby across the driveway. No one on the ground was injured.
A witness stated the plane appeared to have engine trouble before it went on a "list" and then did a corkscrew spiral before hitting the ground.
The flight school operator stated the syllabus that day was practicing emergency maneuvers with an experienced flight instructor. The student had arrived from India only two weeks before to take a year-long flight instruction career program (which would have led to several ratings). Learning to fly in this program would cost about $40,000 in America, vice up to $120,000 in Europe, according to the flight school operator. His school also teaches certification for a European pilot's license. More than 100 foreign students are at the flight school.
