N523GS

I photographed this "Cub look-alike" at Big Lake Alaska last month. The builder/owner is listed in Omak, WA. Does anyone know anything about the basis of this build or have an e-mail address for Gene L Smith, please? (I have snail mail

detail from the FAA site.)

Pete

Pete, It is a Stolquest SQ2 design by Wayne Mackey. There is an SQ4 design also. He regularly wins the STOL contest annually in Alaska with the design. Just Google for tons of information on this Experimental class aircraft.

You probably want the aircraft info direct from designer Mackey..

Pete,

There is more information on the Wayne Mackey Stolquest SQ2 in the July 2010 issue of EAA Sport Aviation which is a special STOL issue with several cogent articles. I didn't have the issue initially at hand when formulating my first reply. One of the articles discusses the strange aerodynamics of the STOL flight results achieved by Alaska bush pilots, i.e getting lift from the bottom of the wing? Answer is explained.

Also, see YouTube for videos of the Valdez, AK STOL Competitions. Pretty amazing performances must be seen to be believed

Many thanks, Doug - the goods as ever! I've just been watching some of the STOL film - what an amazing performance the SQ2 turns in - probably no call for it here in UK but ideal for Alaska and bush ops.

All the best,

Pete
