I am trying to identify the identity/registration of a UK military de-registered airframe from its maintenance serial, 7992M.

The aircraft in question is a Percival P.56 Provost.

Is anyone able to advise the source of a conversion list please?

Malcolm.

Upon further investigation, seems that the aviation-safety site may be off, regarding the i/aframe number for XM704 Gnat.

Mitchell & Eastwood's book shows that Gnat assigned to 7792M

Guess I answered my own question about reassigned numbers.

Back to square one, apologies :?

John

Thanks for your efforts John.

I have been tidying up the database listing of some 52 entries for the Provost and noted that G-BGSB is shown as having an unlikely cn of 886391, whilst the normal cn format for this aircraft is PAC/F/??? or PAC/56/???.

G-INFO states that the previous reg is 7792M which should lead to an RAF military aircraft reg.

Several sources link G-BGSB to WV494, including UKSerials listings for the Provost.

i.e.

PAC/56/057 WV494 Percival Provost T1 d/d 30/10/1953, to 7922M, to G-BGSB, pres. Oman Armed Forces Museum, Muscat.

Did someone err in listing 7792M instead of 7922M?

Also, if you view the original hand written G-INFO registration, there is a "scrawled" note that appears to read "aircraft in OMAN".

What do you think?

Malcolm.

Air-Britain's excellent 'On the Wings of a Gull' Hunting and Percival history shows PAC/F/057 as WV494, to GI as 7922M, sold and registered as G-BGSB. Delivered from Hurn to OmanAF for GI. To OmanAF museum as WV494 and subsequently painted as XF868. Currently on display.

Pete

Thanks Pete for the confirmation, I guess I went the long way round!

Malcolm.
