  • Aircraft Photos uploaded as "UNKNOWN"

To all members,

Over the past few weeks there has recently been a number of aircraft photographs uploaded as "UNKNOWN" where the reg/tail number is CLEARLY visable.

WHY carn't the uploader of an image either enter the reg/tail number or if it does not appear within the database, do a google search, so they can add a new profile.

The admin team on this site are all unpaid volunteers and give alot of their time to help improve the site, BUT if YOU cannot be bothered or are too LAZY to spend a few moments to research the aircraft in your image and add it to the correct profile, then why should we do it for you?

In future, if I notice any images uploaded to the "UNKNOWN" section where the reg/tail number is clearly visable, I will DELETE the image.

rant over

Admin Team

I absolutely support Chris and would add further points to his very reasonable post!

The main task for the Administration team continues to be to correct the many historical errors that remain in the database and to support those members who have requested help. It most definitely is not to clear up after those who seem unable/unwilling to assist us in our endeavours.

On the specific subject of “Unknowns”, it is generally futile to upload such images as they almost certainly will join the countless other unidentified airframes and are highly unlikely to be viewed by members and visitors.

Why is it that some photographers visit museums, for example, and do not identify aircraft before they leave (I’ve always found museum staff to be most helpful) or failing that, to do an Internet search, or to seek help from Admin or fellow members BEFORE uploading an image? As Chis says, Google for the data. If you don't, we have to!

Another unnecessary action is to upload an image to the wrong profile. Agencies in the USA, Germany, Australia, etc, issue identical registrations to very different aircraft types and there have been many instances where uploaders have failed to upload to the correct profile or even more unacceptable, raise a new profile for the alternative aircraft. The upload page clearly shows the destination when the registration is entered. If this information does not relate to the aircraft being uploaded then appropriate action (alternative/new profile) should be implemented.

Also avoid uploading images which feature an aircraft to Airport. They will be moved to Aircraft if the registration can be identified. Otherwise they may be listed as Unknown or more likely, deleted.

Lastly, despite clear instructions regarding duplicate images, we find ourselves having to delete significant numbers, again causing unnecessary work for Admin. If members ensure significant differences in angles of view, say around 45 degrees, there would not be a problem. Also close-up images should show detail not clearly seen in an accompanying image, and not be just an enlargement of part of the other image. Such images will continue to be deleted.

Our efforts are targeted toward improving this unique non-screening aviation site, NOT clearing up the results of thoughtless/unnecessary actions by a small minority.

Thanks Chris...

Me thinks some uploaders are Lazy, a few may not be familiar with general website procedures /protocols / techniques

and others may be just Photo-spamming.

On a similar topic; uploading GIGANTIC images to the forum, still seems to be a problem.

Somehow uploaded (attached) and embedded images in forums, should be limited in size

(e.g. 1024 max width) by hard coded script rules, or auto down-sized.

It's not much fun reading a thread, and having to scroll 3000 pixels sideways to view an image.

I think this issue was discussed in an older thread?
