  • I'm getting tired of airport-data.com

I'm getting tired of some "schmuck"-moderator that keeps deleting my uploaded photos...

I've joined airport-data about 5 years ago and at that that time my contribution to this site was very minimal...

I got more hooked on plane spotting late last summer.

Since then, I've uploaded prolly about 1,000 images.

I've registered many aircraft frames - without asking moderators to do this - it was a part of my hobby to learn more about any given aircraft that I've taken photo of...

Lately, I did noticed some trend that some of images getting deleted even if it were images of the same aircraft from 2 different angles. I haven't uploaded more that 3 images of the same aircraft taken at same day. Most are 2 images of different angles or even 1 image....

What thicks me off...that most images I do upload here, I do link to some other aviation sites - at the same time, airport-data.com(that;s on the bottom of image) could be promoted...and, when, some moderator - "Mr. Schmuck" does delete some of my images, on those sites people see just little "cross" instead of image.

I do need then to re-upload my photos to photobucket or any other image hosting site in order people could see photos...of course, there would not be on the bottom that "airport-data.com"...

Yesterday, I did take photos of Airforce One - not some regular aircraft and I did upload 2 images - 1 angle, 1 -more side shot:

And another - side shot:

One image did was deleted - deleted was even better quality than other photo - kept on, IMHO....

And image, uploaded to airport-data.com and linked to other sites - wasn't visible, just "broken link"....

I do not upload the whole CF card and carefully choose pics that were not similar...However, lately, not one image have been removed/deleted., even if it were shot from different angle...Before uploading a photo, I do check if I do have same airframe - tail number already uploaded.

If this trend will continue, I'll have no choice, but to choose any other aviation site to upload my photos - where photos are more viewed than airport-data....or Flickr..or any other good image hosting site, where I can post photos I want and I won't need to google and register airframe if it isn't on airport-data....

And I could always link photo of an aircraft I've taken to airframe data on airfleets.net or planespotters.net - where data is more reliable on many frames than on airport-data.com....

Well, we'll see, how it goes...and who cares for what....

I do have tons of aircraft photos to be edited, just thinking, is it worth for me to upload those on airport-data.com...if it can be easily deleted by some "mr. schmuck" "moderator".....

Why do you find it necessary to use such a disparaging remark in respect of those of the Admin staff who give freely of their spare time to make this the site what it is today and what it will become as further improvements take effect?

I rather think that an apology to the Admin Team would be in order!

I would draw your attention to the notice that Ken Wang issued on 2011-12-12 which you will find under Message Board in your Member Section.

This was issued in response to a large number of similar images which were being uploaded at that time. In order to make a decision whether an image is considered to be a duplicate, we expect there to be a difference of at least 30 degrees, preferably more, between the two images. Therefore your two images were rightly judged to be too similar and one was deleted.

On the question of Airport-Data images being seen on other sites, I don't understand the point you are making. Are you suggesting that we accept images on this basis regardless of other constraints?

We readily accept that the data contained in some of the sites profiles may be incorrect but this relates to the accuracy of the National Registers from which they were downloaded and whether the person who created any new profile made a correct identification. We are currently working through profiles in order to improve the accuracy. Members are free to raise their own profiles in respect of a new registration but we are very willing to help if needed.

If members are unhappy with any profile, they can propose changes through the ticketing system or by raising such matters through the Data Corrections Forum.

"I thought maybe I was going crazy, somebody is changing my profiles". Profiles are not individually owned and any one should feel free to comment on changes made if they disagree!

Airport-data is one of very few sites which are solely devoted to aviation, have an ordered database, impose very few rules on members and most noticeably, the quality of images uploaded is not an issue. The sites you refer to do not have the back-up data for individual airframes as does Airport-Data.

Many other members have indeed had images deleted for the same reason as yours was but I have seen no complaints from them but there has been a marked reduction in the uploading of such images over past months.

I was the "mr. schmuck" "moderator" who correctly deleted your image and despite your negative attitude I would encourage you to continue uploading to this unique site but would appreciate a change in attitude and an acceptance of the very few rules we apply.

Hi gbmax,

Both of those photos would have been rejected by airliners.net and jetphotos.net - too low, not centred, etc. The rules of this site are minimal, and not onerous.

Peter.

This tread on Facebook already...I didn't want to, but Malcolm Clarke did force it...

Gintaras

I personally DO NOT appreciate anyone insulting any member of the Adim team,

Schmuck

meaning one who is stupid or foolish; or an obnoxious, contemptible or detestable person

There are three member of the Admin team who GIVE their time to this web site for FREE, and going by your comments it is truly a thankless task.

There are NO moderators on this site, we are part of the Admin Team, the only thing that gets "moderated" are the spam posts in the forum which is to everyones benifit.

The rules, if that what you want to call them, I prefer guidelines are very minimal.

Would you prefer us to go down the lines of screening every image uploaded to the site? then waiting several day before they appear?

By submitting images you agree to the minimal guidelines layed down by Ken.

The Admin team have no access to individual profiles, so are unable to change them.

Compared to the number of individual photographers who have submitted images, only a very small number actually offer help via the data corrections forum

The Admin team spend many hours per week correcting, updating, deleting all the incorrect profiles that are added here on a daily basis. We also spend hours moving photos to the correct profiles, identifiying images in the UNKNOWN section and aircraft posted in the Airport section. Maybe we are Schmuck's (stupid and foolish) for doing all this so that some ungrateful person who has a few images deleted still has a web site to share their images?

I think an apology to ALL the admin team is due, otherwise you may not have one for much longer.

Chris Hall

Admin Team member

May I simply point out that this site's Home Page crawl states to the site visitor "NO SCREENING. YOU DECIDE WHICH PHOTO TO SHARE". This is certainly at variance with the photo deletion reality.

Now that two members have in this thread identified themselves as the "distressed" team members doing the photo deletions, I need to also point out I have received private emails from two other of the so-called "team" members about this deletion issue-one was unaware of the deletion policy being so rashly implemented and the other so upset about it---that member may delete ALL thousands of his photos from the site. So much for the team being a team. Instead, this appears to be a rogue effort of two members, unshared and not coordinated with ALL team members.

Something needs to change. A team needs to be on the same page. Let's limited the whining by the two strictly to the photo deletion problem. Yes, you do fine Profile correction work otherwise, and I salute you for that.

And, without looking at the 29000 registration Profile page photos of Air Force One, I suspect gbmax's deleted photo is the one not showing the reg number. Each photo is very good, and sufficiently different from each other. I suspect gbmax's photo not showing the full reg number is his favored one. It would be mine, also, and it should be reloaded if deleted.

I find it difficult to comprehend why Mr Robertson feels the need to contribute to this unfortunate forum thread by making further incorrect, derogatory and clearly unhelpful remarks.

He is well aware as are all who were members on December 12th 2011, that Ken Wang issued the duplicate request in such a way as it appeared to all members when they opened the site immediately following this date, and one may think it strange that it has taken over two years to, as it were, break the surface and only two members have sought to comment.

Neither of the two Administrators so far named would consider themselves "distressed" except by the appalling and unjustified rudeness of both Mr Robertson and Mr Gintaras.

Comments such as "so-called "team" members", "the deletion policy being so rashly implemented", "limited the whining by the two" are, as they say, well out of order and Mr Robertson would do well to choose his words a little more carefully if he wishes to be taken seriously.

If any one is guilty of failing to contribute to the team work of the Administrators, it is the two who seem to have chosen to hide themselves behind Mr Robertson's words but I would seriously question whether this in fact the case.

Any further objective discussion as to how to manage the question of duplicate images and indeed any other subject about which members may have questions would be most welcome.

Malcolm Clarke

Administrator.

Hi All,

First of all, when we say "no screening", it means we do not screen photos before showing them. Any photos uploaded will be publicly available right away. However, we do have a few simple rules. Anyone who upload a photo must click "I agree that site admin can screen/move/edit/delete any photo".

I trust the admin team with this site, their decisions are final. If you disagree with them, you may bring it up to me. Personal attack is not acceptable.

Gintaras, if you are tired with this site, please feel free to delete all your photos and leave. I will be happy to do it for you.
