G-ANTE
I am trying to establish the markings of this aircraft and her Chester Flying Club sister ship G-AMGC in the early 1960s for possible construction of a model.
I attended an Open Day at Broughton in, I think, 1961 and saw the two Tiger Moths on static display. I seem to recall that both had the Chester Flying Club inscription on the engine cowling, but not whether 'TE had had the legend altered to Hawker Siddeley Aviation Ltd. by that time. The earliest photos I can find of her in the late '60s or early '70s show the amended inscription on a black rectangle surrounded by a large yellow diamond with indecipherable lettering around the perimeter, as here. This suggests overpainting of an earlier marking.
A good shot from Air Britain shows Tango Echo with a yellow fin and rudder, which I remember from 1961, and a red outline DH badge on the fin, before the vertical tail acquired first checks and then a sunburst, still in red and yellow. The red was brighter than shown in the later pictures, and the yellow deeper, as I distinctly remember. As the fuselage markings were the same throughout, I suppose the colour shift is due to photographic ageing.
Does anyone know if the anti-spin strakes were in place by 1961? Golf Charlie's strakes were unpainted when photographed in 1963, shortly before her sad demise, and I wonder if they were newly fitted. Also, I'd like to establish the colour of the DH badges on the red rudder and cowling. Grey, blue-grey, silver? The same applies to the beautifully sign-written club inscription, which looks a little dark to have been white. Any details would be most welcome. Thanks.
