  • I've developed the first software to manage aviation photos!

Hi eveyone,

Hope everyone is fine and had a very nice Christmas. Just found this great website. Very useful to get airport info etc.. Well done! Well since thats an aviation photography forum, let's talk about aviation photography.

I've been an aviation photographer for quite some time and have made lots of photo (by the way, how do you upload photos here?) and it was becoming quite difficult to manage around 1000+ shots on my PC. I was getting lots of problems when trying to find a specific photo. You can imagine going through hundreds of photo just to find the one you are looking for! So guys, i've done something that i guess no one have done before. I've developed an aviation photo search engine for my PC!!

The following website contains some screenshots of my software. There are 4 screenshots, Just go to www.cafepress.com/Krishley and then you'll find links to the screenshots on that page.

You add your photos and its information using the software and when you need a photo just use the search engine to find it in seconds. Very useful software if you have hundreds or thousands of aviation photos on your PC!

The search engine is fully customizable - you can add new aircraft types, airports etc..to the existing list if you want. You can rate your photos (1 to 5 stars), dave photos in different categories (e.g. cockpit photos, cargo aircrafts etc...), view slideshows etc..... It runs both on XP and Vista.

What's your opinion about that?

Krishley

krishley,

thanks for your message. Very interesting program.

I am currently using Googles Picasa.http://picasa.google.com/

I use the tag system in Picasa for the Nov number. It also has the 5 star deal.

And it is Free at this time.

The only problem is that my database is getting rather large, and Picasa is showing the strain.

What advantages does you software have over Picasa and does your software allow for a photo backup to another drive?

Once again welcome to airport-data.com

Best Regards,

Hi

Thanks for welcoming me to airport-data.com.

Well, normally you can't really compare two software that are completely different - Picasa is a general purpose software for all types of photos whereas mine has been designed only for aviation photos. But anyway i will try to make some comparison.

1. As you said above your database is getting large and Picasa is showing the strain. Thats a common thing that happens with software thats accompanied with a database. Sometimes your computer can even freeze due to software crash. Normally this happens due to codes that are good but have not been written in a proper way so as to cope with memory space avialable. Since my software includes a database, i should have got this problem but NO. My codes are written in such a way that the software is virtually crash-proof. I have a good friend on mine who is an expert in crashing softwares and he was unable to crash it. Moreover, more than 100 photographers have used my software and no one has got this problem. My software is very very stable and you won't have any problems even if you have lots of information in the database or thousands of photos. You won't have the same problem as in Picasa.

2. My software does not use Tags. Almost all photo software uses tags but mine does not so as to make the search results using the search engine more accurate. You will see a screenshot at the above links where i'm adding a photo to the database. You don't enter any tags. You just enter the following information for a photo:

Aircraft Type

Airline

Airport/Location

Country

Registration Number

Any remarks

Category (military aircrafts, cockpit photos etc...)

Date taken

Rating (you rate your photos)

PS: if one of the information above is not applicable for a photo you can just enter "---" or if you want 'Not applicable'

Using the above information enables my software to produce very accurate results. You just use the powerful search engine to get the photo you are looking for. Just enter the search criteria and the software will look for photos that matches EXACTLY with that search criteria. Software that uses tags don't produce that accurate resuts.

Have you ever used leading aviation websites such as Airliners.net and so on? My software works almost like these sites work except that my software works on your PC and not on the internet.

3. The software comes with an existing list of more than 1300 aircraft types, 900 airlines, 297 airports, 198 countries and 15 categories plus you can add more if you want.

So each time you add a photo to the database you don't have to type all the information. Just select it from the list.

4.My software has a very powerful search engine which provides 100% accurate results. Its very fast and will look for any photos for you in less than 10 seconds even if your database is very very large and you have thousands of photos. (You must have a good graphic card though so that photos are loaded very quickly. Thats normal)

5. Concerning backup yeah you can backup your photos to another Hard Drive (HDD). You can also move your photos as you want on your PC without running the risk of having a broken link in the database or whatever like in other photo management software. The software automatically manages your photos!!

So here are some advantages of my software. I have more than a 100 photographers who uses my software and so far i've got only positive responses from all of them and everyone like the software. Its a very useful tool for aviation spotters.

Thanks

Best Regards

Krishley,

Your program sounds great! I have been looking for something like this to organize my photos. My only problem is that it is only for aviation photos...I have many other type of photos that I am struggling with...

Digital photography is great...but...now I have too many photos. hehe I have my aviation organized by date right now which is not very conducive to finding a certain photo. My others I have organized by event, such as Christmas home 2008. This works fairly well for folders of family stuff. My aircraft stuff does not happen by event for the most part.

How does everyone else organize photos?

Z

Ztex,

I use Picasa 3.0 on my local machine...

It is free and so far it has met my needs. My photo collection is getting rather large, and Picasa is showing a slowdown on my mach.

However...

I do enjoy the use of tags.

I tag my photos with multiple tags for quick lookup.

Example:

I would tag this photo N28KT.

But this aircraft is know also as PowerPlay in the Colorado area.

So I also tag that to the photo.

In addition, I can add more tags such as AcroDuster and SA750.

I can also "tag" the event that it was at... and the airport "KAPA".

This provides me with many search options.

So I am really looking for a program that will allow some "free-text" search options.

This is of the most help to me when I look up warbirds.

B-17... "Liberty Belle"... so forth...

I know the software being described here does have a "Any remarks" field.

I don't know if this will meet my needs as I use so many different search criteria.

Picasa has shown to be stable for me... The index is just getting large.

I guess I could use SQL Server, FoxPro... or an aviation photography program... but with the volume of photos I take...

I just don't know how more efficent a select * from database where fieldname is "%value%" would run.

This topic does deserve more investigation on my part.

Best Regards,

Hi ZTex,

Yeah my software is great. Apart from that i'm working on another software for general photography. Will let you know when its online. Meanwhile as BlueDharma said you can try Picasa.

Regards and Happy New Year to everyone
