I am looking at some pictures from airshows I have on my Photobucket Account and planning to upload them, but in the pics I can't see a Registration number or anything as most of the pics are nose pics or the tail is not very visible but I can make out some of the other numbers, in one pic I have a picture of a E-2 AWACS and the number on the nose is 600. Is there any way I can search out the info and get the serial number of this particular aircraft? and other aircraft?

I have seen a few of Glenn E.'s pics and impressed with them, I have several more pictures of an E-2 that was here a few years ago and want to post them but don't have the information I need

I Googled E2C Hawkeye 600 and came up with this...

There are way to find military aircraft numbers...but you will need some sort of hints...like tail codes and partial numbers.

otherwise you can just upload it under UNKNOWN

If you have any idea of the squadron association, then you can find out which BuNo went to aircraft number 600. There have been a couple of mine where I had to use that method. It can take a lot of work, though!

I have no idea of the Squadron Association.

Perhaps someone here has seen this one. I will post a pic of it here, and see if you Glenn, or anyone else has some ideas :)

I am quite new to this thing of Aircraft numbers, all those letters and numbers are pretty much foreign to me and have no idea what they all stand for, but you guys have been a big help so far :)

This is E-2C BuNo 163693

Thank you Glenn

Just curious, how do you come about the number? I know part of it is the 3693 on the back wing thingy, how do you figure out where the other numbers come from?

Are those somewhere on the aircraft as well?? if so, where could they be located?

Its not visible in your photo but the USN Bureau number is most likely under the tail on the fuselage.

Like this one.

Here's one on a USMC Cobra

For Military numbers this is the place to start....

Read his primers on military nomenclature and you will be well on your way to deciphering Uncles Sam's system.

Thank you very much :)

Your neighbour to the North thanks you....

You yankees need a easier aircraft number system Take a lesson from us Canucks and our air force :)

Those big four are always the last four of the BuNo on the tail. As for knowing what the first ones were, that's just a matter of knowing the system. The age of E-2s means it was going to be no earlier that 153---, but since I'm not home to check my book of E-2 numbers, I just took a logical guess that it was 163--- and went to Baugher's site to confirm that number and there it was.

Actually, when you understand the U.S. military system, it's just as simple as the Canadian versioin. Unless you start looking at the stuff of things prior to the late 1920s and then that can be real interesting!
