I noticed that the Moderator of the Aircraft forums is cclamber07:

I was just surfing the web... around FlightAware and saw your outstanding Gallery. (if this is you...if not I apologize....)

cclambert07 != cclamber07 ??? who knows.

Thank you again for alerting me to the illegal use of my photos from Airportdata.com and being posted by user "cclambert07" on FlightAware.

It aoppears that this individual has a habit of stealing other peoples works, and then claiming it as his/her work.

I have an attorney on this, and he has written an email that I conveyed to FlightAware.

I hope that I do not have to remove all of my works from airportdata.com or other sites, as I like for people to enjoy the works, and as far as I know, NO ONE from the core group of loyal airportdata.com submitters has ever taken works from each other without permission.

This was the most positive part about AD.com. Everyone here has a great deal of respect for each other.

It is too bad that one son of a bitch decided to try and screw it all up

I guess that AD operators may have to design the website that will prevent the saving of a photograph by right clicking. This is being done on all of the photo websites now, and it is for this very reason.

It is just a shame....as cclambert07 could have asked, and if he/she had left my copyright notice intact, I would not have lost any sleep over their posting it to another webiste !

John L.

Better look this clown over again at FlightAware.....I just found 6 more of my photos with cclambert07 claiming ownership.

I have copyrights on every photo I take that I post, and I think we are going to have to teach this A$$ a lesson in manners, and not stealing other peoples property.

John,

I am going to have to agree with you!

Like John, I am willing to share my photos, as long as credit is provided, and I know where they are (in case someone wants to take them "off-line").

This is 100%

WRONG

WRONG

WRONG

I love airport-data.com and I do not blame this site for this problem.

My photos are here to share with airport-data.com users and the pilots who fly these fine aircraft.

The FlightAware staff had better be taking action soon.

Best Regards,

I guess none of my photos are good enough to steal!

No, your photos are good enough to steal.

Your shots are great.

I don't know why he didn't take any.

He took more of Johns photos than mine.

Also he took Dean Ingemanson N48SE

Hello ppl... im new here and i'm starting my database here too... I have this situation but mine was inverse... A guy called Joey get all my helicopter pictures at Airliners.net and he posted them here. I get in contact with the A-D.com adiminstration and they rapidly removed all the photos. After this situation all my photos have Watermark...

Is possible that Airport-Data.com add the Watermark option to protect our photos from this guys...?? This page offers a nice tool to create your own database. It's perfect for the spotters like me since keep all my job organized on internet and also I contribute with the web page. A watermark would be really nice hope the administratio have this feature in mind.

Thanks for all and happy spotting!!

Felix Bahamonde

Hi Guys,

I am in shock to discover the situation. I have shot an email to our cclamber07 to clearify if they are same person.

I will also contact FlightAware administrators to get this issue cleared. I have no doubt that they will co-operate without any delay.

Meanwhile, thanks for the suggestion on preventing stealing photos from this site. I will implement some measures ASAP.

Ken

Ken, this theft of copyrighted photos HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A LONG TIME. I received email about this quite a while back. Other aircraft photo sites are also involved as acceptors of stolen copyrighted photos from this site of yours. The other sites always removed the photos when advised of the problem, apparently. I asked the email sender to make it your problem as well, because it reflects badly on your site. Finally, the egregiousness of the thefts involving many photographers should bring about justice. Kick the culprit off the site and ban the individual's computer URL so that this doesn't resurface with another alias. No pardon, no forgiveness. I thank Paul for calling my attention to the theft of one of my photos of N5828S in most recent (today) private email.

You will recall a Forum entry with theft of my photo of a Cessna 182 with unusual color scheme without permission to use-that Forum was moderated by cclamber07, who did nothing absolutely about it. Perhaps now we all can understand why. Birds of a feather flock together!

Now, all these other Forum entries with the evidence should finally bring about the downfall of the thief. Copyright law is under US Code 17. Theft is under US Code 18. Theft of intellectual property is a felony crime, upheld in many court cases.

This is not only copyright violation of aircraft photos, verbal descriptions have been "lifted" as well. This could be considered a violation as well. I have reviewed my past emails received about this, and my original Forum post about the problem. Ken, you apparently did not see or read that.

Doug,

What's the URL of your original post regarding photo theft? I might missed it.

Ken

To All,

I have added some small script to prevent right-click on photo images, a tiny step towards anti-theft.

Photo watermark will be next, it may take a while. Personally I don't like watermarks, that's why I didn't do anything while one of our members (Daniel Compton) suggested a while ago. Now it seems I don't have a choice.

Ken

Ken, the URL is http://airport-data.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=834 It is under Photography dated 8 October 2008 as I recal.

Dougl

I did read that. As I said in last post, I don't like watermarks, and didn't expect the issue escalate to this level, so I didn't do anything.

Ken,

I am very sorry to stir up the hornets nest here...

I too dislike "watermarks".

I am just as much shocked as you to discover this situation. I love airport-data.com. I look at the photos of others daily.

It is a shock that someone who loves aircraft as much as I do would just post the images without regard on another website.

"Most" of us would have said ok if the Copyright was on the shot.

I just don't understand why it was done...

John and Doug and others are correct. And I thank you for taking action.

I am just sorry that it has come to this.

Best Regards,

I did some more research, and found these photos:

Photo from cclamber07:

http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/photo/144847.html

Photo from cclambert07:

http://flightaware.com/photos/view/photo/176456-2e44bf3dae4b18b21be0db017d445a7fdce51976;size=full;tail=N1SN;o=0

Both photos are 640x425 before copyright tag, and the photos are exactly the same. Which means both users have access to same original photo. I think it's pretty safe to conclude that cclamber07 on airport-data.com and cclambert07 on flightaware.com are same person.

For Paul, Don't ever rue bringing up problems here that may affect us all. You have brought the thorny issue to a head, and for that I commend you.

For Ken, Thanks for your detective work-several of us independently concluded the same.

Bummer. The right click disable is going to kill me. I had downloade all my shots used for aircraft recognition back to the a/c recog folder because that way I had copyright on them. It finally dawned on me that I could have a larger version to fill the screen so I have just been working on that, copying them back in large version. I'm about 2/3 done. After downloading to A-D I got rid of the originals because I don't collect civil planes. So now I have about 1/3 still small. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I really would not like to see watermarks. They always bother me when I'm looking at photos and I think they really detract from the photo.

Glen,

Have you tried the new download button? It will give you your originally uploaded file.

Ken thanks for your work on this issue. I have not found any of my photos in the offending pile...They may be out there somewhere who knows.

If you do watermarks try to make them optional with optional placement, much like airliners.net does. I don't care for them much either but if it will protect us...

Thanks,

Zane

Watermarks can be are optional if you dont like it you dont have to add it on your photos. But it's a solution that works perfectly in this situation. Every mayor aviation photography web page offers the option of a watermark. There need to be something to protect the work of the photographers that contribute to this webpage.

Got an email back from FlightAware admin. They suspended the account tool But she didn't mention if those stolen photos are deleted.

I just rechecked the FlightAware website and cclambert07 still has 234 photos posted, including two (at least) of my copyrighted photos-I did not review all. So, they haven't scrubbed any unless perhaps a person has complained directly. I will call them on mine that are shown without my permission-two of N5828S. Suggest all members of A-D take a look and see if you have been robbed of your copyrighted photos. Use the FlightAware link in BlueDharma's Forum post here.

Doug is right. I just went through page 1 and page 3 of cclambert07's collection on FlightAware. Among 40 photos, 29 are taken from our site, from various members.

It's pretty easy to check. Just search the aircraft registry on our site, and compare the thumbnails on aircraft info page with the one on flightaware. If you find identical ones, simple right click on thumbnails from both site, choose "copy link address" (or something like that) then paste to an editor (such as notepad on Windows). Add the aircraft registry in front, you will get a list like the one above.

Can anyone help me to check the rest of the pages? 1 or 2 pages per person should be enough. Please post back the result here if you can help. Thanks in advance.

Ken

If you can help, please make sure list the page number you plan to work on here, in order to avoid duplicate work.

None of my shots there, but picked these three at random off flightaware and they were taken from airport-data photographers------N404CM by Geoff Smith,N61848 by P. Alejandro Diaz,N105BK by Sergel Riabsev......I cant believe that someone would do this to the rest of us .....I have recently started adding my more recent shots to flightaware....Ive heard that fboweb is starting to accept photos there...I havent checked there yet....flightaware and airport data should flush everything that cclamber07 has posted.....I do not like watermarks and dont like them doing it on flightaware but thats what they do........within the last year 3 of my photos posted on airport-data were used by the news media after crashes with fatals...one just last week ...media found them in a search then called General Aviation here in Danville Va. and they gave them my number ...of which they can use for free.. just give me credit...thats what these sites are all about ...but we just dont someone to take our work from us.

I was checking site ranks on Yahoo. I used N240R as search keyword, as I know we are the only site that has N240R photo.

And I found this:

Doug, you need to contact FlightAware again. I will include this into my next email to FlightAware admin too.

I'm going to email this guy asking him where he got one of these pictures, then when he lies to me I am basically going to tell him he is full of Sh**

For photographs of yours copyrighted on this site that appear on FlightAware.com submitted by other than yourself, please notify them directly by this email address:

sara.land@flightaware.com

You can also call FlightAware toll free in the USA at 1-800-713-8570, after the recording press ONE on your phone and ask for Sara Land.

The N numbers of your stolen photos are enough to get her ball rolling. Make a strong case for FlightAware to kick off any submitter of even a single copyrighted stolen photo. I told her cclambert07 had been apparently kicked off by them (she knew of the problem) and why were his photos remaining on the site?

I also told her a method to automatically screen every photo submission for prior copyright by name of photographer; she was going to approach management with that. I trust you will keep this harried lady busy. I requested two photos of N5828S and one photo of N240R (or all of these of mine) be removed immediately. It is obvious that they are in way over their head on their recent venture of publishing aircraft photos on their website.

I am not really happen about their action speed. Only two photos (the two Doug mentioned) were removed from cclambert07's collection. It was 234 photos in total before, now 232.

I will resend my last email to Sara and wait.

Ken

Sorry I made a mistake. N240R photo was stolen by another user (with username scanfan), which has been removed. So only two N5828S photos were deleted from cclambert07's collection.

I was going to call the 1800 number on the site. I tried last night from work when I read this, but all I got was voice mail. I will try again tomorrow during the day when I am at home.

As of now, 220 photos left in cclambert07's collection on FlightAware.

Some deeper dig turned out that cclamber07's submissions on our site (at least some of them) are taken from other aviation sites, here's an example:

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Untitled-(NetJets)/Gulfstream-Aerospace-G-IV/1178274&tbl=photo_info&photo_nr=5&sok=WHERE__(reg_%3D_%27N422QS%27)_&sort=_order_by_photo_id_DESC_&prev_id=1192690&next_id=1162384

(this photo will be removed soon).

(edit: I copied this photo aside as a proof)

Guess it's time to wipe out his submissions.

Ken,

Whoa...

What a pain in the back-end.

cclamber07 like proof-positive...Not a good guy. Looks like everyone has suffered on this one.

Ken, I am glad you are taking positive steps to resolve these issues!

Thanks again.

Thank you all for the support in this issue. I just deleted all photos submitted by cclamber07 from our site. I also made a suggestion to FlightAware that they take the same action. We should use the time to do something more construtive instead of checking stolen photos.

It is interesting is you put this guy's pseudonym in the search engine...

Of course there are numerous links to Flight Aware and Airport-Data depending whether you use cclamber07 or cclambert07

Ken,

In speaking with Sara Land at FlightAware, I got the strong feeling she felt overwhelmed, and would only act on one photo at a time with evidence for that photo. I suggested she really neded to take up the problem with FlightAware's management and their legal department. Her excuse: "We get a million calls a day", but probably not about copyright violations. I am not sure what cclambert07's status is there with most of his photos still there, although she claimed he no longer a member. Very odd.

Every A-D member who has a copyrighted aircraft photo stolen and appearing on that site needs to call Sara Land and state their beef. I tried, and got three of my copyrighted photos removed in short order by her. Again, her number is I-800-713-8570 and press one and ask for her.

They really need to police every photo submission, and are in over their head with what they recently started-showing aircraft photos, many purloined.
